In 1941 his father sent Brando to his alma mater, the Shattuck Military Academy, in Faribault, Minnesota. Defying his teachers and often fighting with other students, Brando resisted the discipline that the academy attempted to impose. His one success was his appearance in three one-act plays, in which he demonstrated a talent for mimicry and disguise.

Ruby Dolores Alverio arrived in The Bronx from Puerto Rico as a 5-year-old. She started taking dance lessons a year later and by 16 was discovered by a talent scout, who recommended her to famed producer Louis B. Mayer. It was a question raised for us recently as we watched the German film “All Quiet on the Western Front.” The winner of this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Film is offered (on Netflix) in several versions, including a dubbed English version. A non-German speaker can choose to watch it either dubbed or subtitled. The experience turned out to be an unhappy one; Brando was horrified at Chaplin’s didactic style of direction and his authoritarian approach. Brando had also appeared in the spy thriller Morituri in 1965; that, too, failed to attract an audience. Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972) rejuvenated Brando’s career. As organized-crime boss Don Vito Corleone, Brando created one of the most memorable—and most imitated—film characters of all time. His performance earned him another best-actor Oscar, but he refused the award in protest against the stereotypical portrayals of Native Americans throughout motion picture history. Brando was further vindicated as an actor by his leading role in Bernardo Bertolucci’s sexually explicit L’ultimo tango a Parigi (1972; Last Tango in Paris).
